Holiday food substitutions

The holidays are here, and for many of us, that means it's time to feast! Whether for you that looks like cooking up a storm at home with family, or eating out with colleagues and friends– the season can bring a lot of indulgences. Although many Christmas treats are high in calories, fat, and more, we've put together a list of our three most highly requested healthy holiday food swaps to keep you from depriving yourself of the holiday food you love. We believe its important to satisfy your seasonal cravings and enjoy your favorite foods without enduring guilt.

Here are three things I do to make these holiday favorites healthier, tastier, and guilt-free.

Tamales

Tip: Add protein and veggies to keep you full for longer

Tamales are a classic dish in our community during the holidays. I love the versatility of this meal; however, depending on who makes it, you might have a lot of masa, carbs, and very little meat. Adding more chicken/meat and a few veggies will add protein and volume, which means you will get full faster, and it will prevent you from having one too many.

Pozole

Tip: Choose lean meat vs. fatty meat.

Let's discuss the most popular dish in our culture, homemade pozole. Traditionally this plate is served with pork. A perfect substitution for this meal would be swapping out the pork and using chicken breast instead. You will enjoy the savory taste of all the spices, have a good source of protein, and avoid the few extra calories.

Alcohol Drinks

Tip: Swap juices for sparkling water

Although avoiding drinking during this holiday season might be unrealistic, there are ways to avoid all the extra calories.

Sugary cocktails and mixed drinks can be delicious but have higher amounts of sugar. Substituting juices for sparkling water and fresh fruit will allow you to enjoy one or two drinks without hurting your caloric intake. There are a variety of sparkling water flavors; many have zero to very few calories and taste amazing. Enjoy and drink guilt-free.
